Nissan to Equip Next-Generation Titan Pickup with New Cummins Tu

Nissan made some pretty bold claims when they announced their partnership with Cummins to make the 2015 Nissan Titan diesel powered. Did they meet their goals? According to some leaked information – yes and no.

cummmins-titan-dieselWhen the original announcement came, expectations were set at 300-hp and about 550 lb-ft of torque. An unnamed source spilled the beans to TFLtruck about the Titan’s new power train saying that the upcoming truck will make just 275 ponies. However, the real eye-opener is the trucks 560 lb-ft of torque.

Those numbers sound about right for buyers, as pickups are all about torque. Currently only the Ram 1500 is the other contender in the half-ton pickup truck segment with a diesel engine. Rated to get 28 mpg on the highway, the V6 diesel in the Ram makes 420 lb-ft of torque. Ford is also set to throw a diesel engine into the upcoming 2015 Ford F-150, but little else is known at this point.

Nissan seems devoted to providing truck-buyers with an alternative to gasoline, as a smaller, diesel-powered Frontier was shown off at the 2014 Chicago Auto Show today, with a 2.8-liter turbo-diesel which makes around 200-hp and 350 lb-ft of torque, all while promising 35 percent better fuel economy over the V6 equipped Frontier.

While Nissan is promised to the idea of a diesel Titan, the Frontier Diesel Runner will be on display during the Chicago Auto Show’s public days in order to gauge customer reaction to the new pickup.
